The HRTM Master in Family and Consumer Sciences program requires a minimum of 30 credits (including 4-6 credits of thesis) under the thesis plan. The non-thesis plan requires a minimum of 32 credits of coursework with a written comprehensive examination. Both plans require a final oral examination and are comprised of 16-week classes offered only during Fall and Spring.

Students who plan to engage in research and teaching should pursue the thesis option, conducting an independent research project leading to publication in a top peer-reviewed journal. Students whose goals are oriented to the hospitality industry may choose instead to pursue an Applied Management Project (non-thesis option).

If you don’t have HRTM work experience, you will have the opportunity to complete a paid internship in your area of specialization. Prior to the completion of 12 credits, you will form a program advisory committee to determine the appropriate courses for your degree work.

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences Graduate Program offers rolling admissions, and criteria for acceptance include letters of reference, a statement of interest essay, and a resume.
